The magic spark for fitness motivation

Today, we’re digging into a topic that almost everyone would like more of: motivation.

It’s an essential spark for propelling us through life’s challenges, including your next workout.

Why fitness motivation matters

Ever found yourself gearing up for a WOD, only to realize that inner drive is nowhere to be found?

You consider scaling, cutting reps, or skipping it altogether. There’s nothing you want to do less right now.

Here’s the thing: motivation isn’t just the fuel for today’s effort — it’s a tool for consistent progress and success.

Keeping the Fire Burning

If you wait for motivation to happen, you’ll miss out (we’ll save motivation vs. discipline for another time).

But you can cultivate it and keep the fire ablaze, even when it’s pouring rain, the couch is calling you, and Netflix is looking binge-worthy.

Here are 7 strategies proven to work:

  1. Set Clear and Realistic Goals: Dream big but start small. Achievable milestones are the breadcrumbs on your fitness journey (read: Atomic Habits for more about how motivation ties into the psychology of habit)
  2. Embrace Community Support: A high-five or a word of encouragement can get you from zero to movement on tough days, even if it’s digital (join: WODwell’s free online community on Discord)
  3. Variety is the Spice of Life: Mix up your workouts. Routine is the enemy of enthusiasm. Programming matters (try: our training programs)
  4. Track your Results: Nothing beats seeing your progress inked on paper or pixels. It’s like getting a pat on the back from your past self. (try: WODwell’s free Activity Log)
  5. Celebrate the Non-Physical Wins: Mental resilience is a muscle. Got through a workout without cursing the burpees (out loud)? Give yourself credit.
  6. Your Own Best Rival: Compete against yourself. It’s not about being better than the next person on the leaderboard, but being better than you were yesterday.
  7. Rest to Impress: In order to progress we need to pause regularly. Embrace rest days as “optimization days” — they’re part of the program.

What we’re doing to help

The best affiliate gyms’ coaches and community can inspire members to show up and do the work each day. But what if you’re training solo in a corner of your garage?

We’re taking what we learned as gym owners and harnessing technology to make it easier for the garage gym athlete to be consistent in their training:

  • Celebrating Your Wins: Whether it’s a PR, a streak, or an anniversary, recognize and celebrate your efforts.
  • Enabling Coaching Connections: We’re developing tools to enable our coaches to understand each athlete’s unique goals and challenges, to support more athletes than we could in person.
  • Smart Scaling: Don’t sweat the Rx. Our click-to-scale feature allows you to adjust workouts to fit your needs.
  • Learning While Lifting: We explain the ‘why’ behind your workouts, warm-ups, and skill development. Each session is a learning opportunity. The more you know 💫
  • Beyond the Sweat: Our community forum is about more than just leaderboards. It’s a place to share experiences big and small, in and out of the gym.

While no digital experience can replicate the energy of all your lifting buddies at the gym, we’re committed to making at-home training as compelling, educational, and motivating as possible.

We’ll help you light the spark, then supply the fun factor to make it a tad easier.

Remember, the journey of a thousand reps begins with a single squat. Keep pushing, and most importantly, keep it fun.

Stay strong and smile often,

Jeremy (and Coach Lisa)
